It had taken the place of that rush of drugs and everything. I cleaned up, and by the time I graduated high school, my grades were still bad. I did theater in high school, and started improv. After that, I was like, okay, I need to get my grades up, so I started acting. So I had to go to these classes and everything. I smoked a blunt in high school, got arrested, and then got court-ordered rehab. By the time I hit my sophomore year in high school, I was just off the rails. We would steal cars, we would break into stuff, we would do drugs. So I started high school and just kinda went rogue.
It's kind of a cliche story, but my parents got divorced when I was 13, which is always a phenomenal time to deal with that. Can you talk a bit about following your dreams without a safety net? Like, did you parents have anything to say about that? I read that you quit school to try your hand at comedy. Then Sandler was like, "Do you want to do my movies?" So I acted in Click and jumped on I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry as a writer and producer and actor. I helped write that with Sandler and Covert. A way bigger movie, and it was with David and Rob and everybody, and they loved what I did on that. So they gave me the script, and I did a pass on it, and they were like, "Yes, this is exactly what we were talking about." And then, from there, I did Benchwarmers.
And I was like, "Well, I can do that!" So they were like, okay, cool. We need someone to make it insane and rated R. So I sad down with him and Allen Covert, and they were like, hey, we've got this script, Grandma's Boy, but it's a broad romantic comedy, PG-13, and that's not what we want. He saw your standup." I used to do these jokes about my grandma, and they had a script called Grandma's Boy. So they called me and said, "Adam wants to meet you. His manager called my manager, because we were in the same company. It basically started with Adam (Sandler) being a fan of my standup.

He said he read that script in bed with his wife and she said, "What are you howling at?" And he said, "This movie is insane!"īucky Larson wasn't your first Happy Madison joint, but can you talk a bit about getting cozy with that group, becoming a "Happy Madison regular," if that's the right term? Just the Miami Vice years, just that was f****** insane. His life is f****** insane! That guy has some of the craziest stories ever. My favorite part of that movie was just hanging out with Don on set. He's my dream interview, I hope I get to do him one day.
I saw that movie because Don Johnson is my favorite actor of all time. With some movies, it becomes a meme of "Oh, that movie is understood to be bad," mostly by people who haven't seen it or who are expecting it to be, like, The English Patient. I have to explain to people that it's not a bad movie. I'm sitting on the Bucky Larson Wikipedia page, and I thought maybe you had named your cat Miles Deep.Īctually, I want to talk about Bucky Larson. I was just, like, "Oh, uh, I have a cat now." He was my best friend, and he just showed up one day when I was a kid. That's weird! You know, my childhood cat did that. He just walked in one day and didn't leave. I live by myself with a cat who just kinda wandered in one day and now lives with me. At this point, the best part of my job is getting to actually talk to people every now and then.
